Chelsea Boss Lampard Reveals What Impressed Him About Anjorin On Champions League Debut
Published: December 09, 2020
Chelsea finished their Champions League Group E fixtures without a loss after playing out a 1-1 draw with Russian visitors Krasnodar at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Cabella fired low to put the Russian Premier League side in front in the 24th minute but the lead lasted only four minutes as Jorginho scored from the penalty spot after Tammy Abraham was felled in the area.
There was a Champions League and full debut for Anglo-Nigerian winger Faustino Anjorin and he logged 80 minutes before making way for Olivier Giroud.
It was a night to remember for the England youth international; he saw plenty of the ball and looked threatening on the left flank with some incisive runs.
At minute 52, Anjorin had an opportunity to score but saw his shot towards goal blocked by Krasnodar captain Martynovich and almost created a chance for Havertz to net the winner with 17 minutes remaining but Gorodov smothered the ball.
Speaking to reporters at the post-match press conference, manager Frank Lampard admitted that he was impressed by the performance of Anjorin and highlighted the player's physicality and good ball handling skills.
"In training he's shown since last season a real ability to step straight into the level. He showed it today, the way he moves the ball quickly and his physical attributes," Lampard said on Anjorin.
"He's had some fitness issues, it's a work in progress, but the more he trains with us the better he gets.
"With injuries we have, in short-term he will spend more time with us. He grew into the game as it went along."
Apart from being an attacking outlet, Anjorin was also solid defensively, winning a game-high four tackles against Krasnodar.
