Charlton Athletic Boss Bowyer Gives His Verdict On Red Card Shown To Top Scorer Aneke
Published: February 14, 2021
Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer was disappointed to see his top scorer Chuks Aneke sent off during his side's 3-2 loss to Gillingham in a League One clash at the Valley on Saturday evening.
The former Arsenal trainee was cautioned in the 68th minute for outmuscling a Gillingham defender and red carded for a second yellow after a tackle on Connor Ogilvie in the 70th minute.
Aneke netted an equaliser for the Addicks in the first half having hit the woodwork twice, taking his tally to eleven goals in the division.
Speaking about the dismissal of the Nigerian striker, Bowyer told Charlton's official website : "Then you get the red card and that’s it. If you don’t get that red card, we go on to win that game.
"If you give one for a yellow, you don’t give the other. It’s a contact sport. Just because you make contact doesn’t mean it’s a yellow card.
"If you’re getting rugby tackled, that’s a yellow card. If he catches him trying to go for the ball that’s not always a yellow card. These decisions are the difference between winning and losing."
Aneke has been on the books of Charlton since 2019 after stops at Arsenal, Stevenage, Preston North End, Crewe Alexandra, Zulte Waregem and Milton Keynes Dons.
