'We Were So Certain It Was A Penalty' - Man Utd Captain On Penalty Not Given After Ajayi Made Contact
Published: February 14, 2021
Harry Maguire has lamented the decision of the referee to annul a spot kick after a VAR review in the second half of their 1-1 draw with West Brom on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute after Nigeria center back Semi Ajayi
was adjudged to have fouled Maguire but referee Craig Pawson
changed his mind after viewing the screen.
The confusion was that Maguire was clearly offside when Ajayi made the challenge but the contact was not sufficient to bring down the Manchester United captain.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Maguire said : "We were so certain it was a penalty. Not sure why they needed to send him [the referee] to a monitor. The clip was minimal but it was a penalty. It seems like the decisions are going against us.
"We can't be relying on VAR decisions - we have to improve."

Manchester United got a point from the game thanks to a brilliant Bruno Fernandes volley on the stroke of half time.
