Anjorin misses out on bench role as Chelsea record impressive draw at Real Madrid
Published: April 28, 2021
Of the twenty-four players that traveled with the Chelsea squad to the Spanish capital for their Champions League meeting with Real Madrid, Faustino Anjorin was the only player not included in the matchday squad by manager Thomas Tuchel.
Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz were the attacking midfielders and wingers picked over the Anglo-Nigerian starlet.
Anjorin was spotted watching proceedings from the stands during Tuesday night's meeting at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium which ended one goal apiece.
Though he didn't make the matchday 23, the experience of being embedded with the first team for such an important game would be good for his development.
American golden boy Christian Pulisic struck in the 14th minute to give Chelsea an early lead but an excellent goal from Karim Benzema helped Real Madrid earn a draw.
Anjorin made his Champions League debut against Krasnodar in a group stage match back in December, before making the bench against Atlético Madrid in London last month.
The second leg of the Champions League semifinal will hold at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, May 5.
