'Unbelievable ball from Iheanacho' - Ex-Chelsea winger hails Leicester striker for delicious assist vs Southampton
Published: April 30, 2021
Leicester City suffered a minor dent in their charge for a Champions League spot after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at the St. Mary's Stadium on Friday.
Three Nigerian players made the starting lineup - Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho for the Foxes and Nathan Tella for the Saints.
However, the former Arsenal schoolboy, who missed a decent chance earlier, was the Southampton player sacrificed in order for defender Mohammed Salisu to be substituted in following the red card shown to Jannik Vestergaard in the tenth minute.
Despite being a man down, it was the resilient Southampton that opened the scoring through James Ward-Prowse from the penalty spot just after the hour mark.
Iheanacho has been so good with his feet in recent weeks but it was his hands that cost Leicester City the opening goal, the referee pointed to the spot after the number 14 handled the ball in the area.
Jonny Evans equalised for Brendan Rodgers' team seven minutes later, the center back heading home from close range after an excellent delivery into the box by Iheanacho.
Former Chelsea winger Karen Carney hailed the Nigeria international for providing a delicious assist for the defender.
"It is an unbelievable ball from Kelechi Iheanacho. Jonny Evans heads it in low and there was no chance the goalkeeper could get anything on it," Carney said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Iheanacho would have become the first Leicester City player other than Jamie Vardy to score in four consecutive Premier League matches if he had found the net against Southampton.
