Nigeria or Russia? FC Krasnodar-owned striker reveals the country he wants to represent
Published: May 14, 2021FC Krasnodar loanee German Onugkha has ended speculation over his international future by revealing that he wants to represent Russia ahead of Nigeria.
Born in Moscow twenty four years ago, the in-form Vejle Boldklub frontman qualifies to represent the Super Eagles if he invokes the granny rule as he has a Nigerian father.
Onugkha recently earned rave reviews for his hat-trick in Vejle's thrilling 3-3 draw with AC Horsens, a brilliant individual display that saw him named Player of the Round in the Danish Superliga.
The striker is confident that he can break into the Russian national team in the next one and a half years.
"I don’t choose between Russia and Nigeria. Targeting the Russian national team, a year and a half, and I'll be there. I am 100% sure. It's time, it's time," Onugkha said to Championat.
"The next season needs to be on a good note, that's all. Why not? I am already 24 years old, I have good statistics, I can score goals. The next stage is the Russian national team. I can do it, I'm sure of it.
"I have now scored four in the RPL, four in Denmark. I look at the statistics of the same Zabolotny, the same Sobolev, who scored ten and nine.
"Yes, even on Dzyuba. I can do as well. Yes, now Dzyuba is the strongest striker. He is in good and familiar conditions, where he is the leader and the captain. They play on it.
"Then comes Sobolev, followed by Zabolotny but soon Onugkha will break into this trio. This is the next task."
Onugha turned out for FC Torpedo Tamala, FC Narovchat, FC Atmis Kevdo-Melsitovo, FC Zenit-M Penza and FC Volgar Astrakhan prior to his move to Krasnodar in 2018.
