'We are the Blues' - Chelsea icon Obi Mikel reacts to Champions League win vs Man City
Published: May 30, 2021
In an all-English affair, Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League for the second time in their history on Saturday night, beating Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 1-0 at the EstΓ‘dio do DragΓ£o in Porto, Portugal.
Three minutes before the interval, Germany international Kai Havertz scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when he latched on to a pass from Mason Mount and slotted past Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.
The Citizens, despite dominating the possession statistics, managed only one shot on target over the course of ninety minutes.
Riyad Mahrez came close to scoring a last-gasp equaliser but his half volley flew just over the bar, with Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy static.
Shortly after the game, former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel took to social media to celebrate Chelsea beating Manchester City in the Champions League showpiece.
The defensive midfielder was a key member of the Chelsea squad that won the Champions League in 2012, playing the entirety of their win on penalties against Bayern Munich in the final.
In Mikel's second season at Stamford Bridge, he was an unused substitute as Chelsea were beaten by Manchester United in the final.
"Well done boys πͺπ»πͺπ»πͺπ»πππ we are the blues π", Mikel wrote on Instagram.
Mikel recorded 372 appearances in all competitions during a ten-and-a-half-year association with Chelsea, including 59 matches in the Champions League.
