Ex-Flying Eagles center-back secures promotion to EFL Championship with Blackpool
Published: May 30, 2021
Former Nigeria U20 international Marvin Ekpiteta could feature in the EFL Championship in the forthcoming season if he honours his contract with Blackpool.
On Sunday afternoon, the Seasiders secured promotion to the Championship via the League One playoffs, beating Lincoln City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.
A center-back by trade, Ekpiteta watched proceedings from the bench for the entirety of the game, unlike the seminal second leg tie vs Oxford United, where he played the whole of the second half.
Blackpool had a disastrous start to the game against Lincoln City as Ollie Turton put the ball into his own net following a cross into the area in the 47th second.
Blackpool turned it around thanks to a brace from Kenny Dougall, who equalised in the 34th minute before his match-winning strike eight minutes into the second half.
Ekpiteta arrived at Blackpool in the summer of 2020 and did well in his first season with the club, scoring two goals and registering three assists in 28 matches in the regular season.
The Enfield-born central defender has not played for Nigeria at any level since 2013.
Former Fulham starlet Tayo Edun and Tottenham Hotspur loanee Timothy Eyoma went the distance for Lincoln City.
