Liverpool icon Gerrard wants to sign eighth Nigerian player of his Rangers tenure
Published: June 27, 2021
According to the online edition of Daily Mail UK, Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, who manages Scottish champions Glasgow Rangers, is eyeing a move for Nigeria-eligible Northampton prospect Caleb Chukwuemeka.
Caleb is the older brother of central midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka who made two appearances for Aston Villa's first team last season and helped the U18s win the prestigious FA Youth Cup.
The older Chukwuemeka has yet to sign a professional contract at Northampton Town and could be leaving the League Two club for minimal compensation next January if he doesn't sign a new deal.
Rangers may face competition for the signature of the 19-year-old with the likes of Aston Villa, Norwich City and Club Brugges credited with an interest in the center forward in the past.
Since the appointment of Gerrard as coach in 2018, Rangers have signed seven players of Nigerian descent, namely Sheyi Ojo, Ovie Ejaria and Umar Sadiq who arrived on loan deals, Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun, former Flying Eagles midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh and Calvin Bassey.
An eighth player of Nigerian descent in former Golden Eaglets invitee Malcolm Ebiowei was signed for Rangers academy team in February 2020.
Regarded as one of the most exciting talents to emerge from Northampton academy in recent seasons, Caleb Chukwuemeka netted two goals in 28 matches for the first team in 2020-2021.
