Bolton Wanderers plotting potential move for 'homesick' former Arsenal winger Amaechi
Published: June 28, 2021
League One newcomers Bolton Wanderers are reportedly plotting a potential summer move for former Arsenal winger of Nigerian parentage Xavier Amaechi.
Football Insider says the England youth international is undergoing a trial at Bolton Wanderers, who were promoted to the third-tier of English football via the playoffs last season.
German daily newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost broke the news that Amaechi is homesick and wants to return to England, without mentioning his suitors.
The 20-year-old was seeking a return to England in the January transfer window but nothing materialized before he headed out on loan to Karlsruher SC, for whom he played seven matches in the second half of 2020-2021.
Once rated in the same bracket as Bukayo Saka during their time at the Hale End Academy, Amaechi has struggled to live up to his billing since transferring to Hamburg in 2019, so much so that he has yet to make his starting debut for the club.
Amaechi, who cost Hamburg a fee of 2.5 million euros, has represented England at U15, U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels.
Bolton Wanderers have brought in Nigerian striker Dapo Afolayan from West Ham on a permanent deal this summer, while Nathan Delfouneso is contracted to the club for the 2021-2022 campaign.
