Nigerian defender agrees new deal with Arsenal
Published: July 11, 2021
English Premier League side Arsenal are on the verge of confirming that promising Nigeria-eligible defender Mazeed Ogungbo has extended his stay at the club.
The news was first broken by Arsenal youth team expert Jeorge Bird who reported that a deal has been agreed for Ogungbo to sign his first professional contract with Arsenal.
A Republic of Ireland youth international, Ogungbo is a left-sided defender who can be deployed at left-back and center-back.
He was one of five teenagers of Nigerian descent offered new deals by Arsenal at the end of last season, the others being Ovie Ejeheri, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, Daniel Oyegoke and Arthur Okonkwo.
While Oyegoke turned down the offer and joined Brentford, Okonkwo is now contracted to Arsenal until June 2024 having put pen to paper on a fresh three-year contract.
A no-nonsense defender, Ogungbo has totaled 37 appearances in the U18 Premier League and also featured in the FA Youth Cup, Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy whilst still a scholar.
