Besiktas eye move for Akpom as alternative to former Chelsea striker
Published: July 11, 2021
Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom continues to be linked with a departure from Championship club Middlesbrough before the close of the transfer window.
Futbol Arena has suggested that Istanbul giants Besiktas are keeping an eye on Akpom as alternative to former Chelsea star Diego Costa.
It won't be the first time that the Black Eagles are attempting to acquire the Arsenal academy product as they were in the mix to sign him before he opted for Middlesbrough last September.
The Turkish website claims that Besiktas have held preliminary talks with Akpom's camp over a deal.
Speaking on TRT Spor, Fatih Doğan said : "Chuba Akpom is on Beşiktaş's alternative list. Managers have made preliminary interviews. It is desired to lower the 3 million euro transfer fee.
"Work continues with Diego Costa. Akpom is one of the top alternative candidates on the list".
Akpom contributed five goals and two assists in 39 games over the course of the 2020-2021 campaign for Boro.
The 25-year-old enjoyed loan spells at Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City and Sint-Truiden during his time at Arsenal.
Akpom was among the first group of players to report for pre-season training at Middlesbrough.
