'I'm still 100 percent at Genk' - West Ham-linked striker Onuachu on transfer speculation
Published: August 04, 2021
Racing Genk were beaten 2-1 by Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round at the Luminus Arena on Tuesday night.
Heading into the fixture, one of the key talking points had to do with the future of the Belgian Pro League Player of the Year, Paul Onuachu following his omission from the matchday squad against KV Oostende on July 30.
Onuachu was earlier criticized for playing at a level below what we are used to seeing in his first two matches of the season against Club Brugge and Standard Liege but cranked things up a gear against Shakhtar Donetsk.
On his return to the starting lineup, the Nigeria international was the most dangerous player on the Racing Genk side and he duly opened the scoring with a trademark headed goal in the 39th minute.
Early in the second half, Onuachu came close to doubling the advantage with a close range effort but goalkeeper Trubin rescued the Ukrainian club.
Speaking post-match, Onuachu assured that he's committed to Racing Genk amid speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League, West Ham United in particular.
"I just played a game. That shows that I am still 100 percent at Genk. I try to have an impact on the team and just stay here for the time being," Onuachu told Het Laatste Nieuws (via voetbalnieuws).
Clubs mulling over a move for Onuachu including West Ham United have been put off by Racing Genk's €30million of the striker.
