Chelsea 2 Spurs 2 : Anjorin makes first pre-season appearance; Omole benched; Ugbo missing
Published: August 04, 2021
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur's pre-season preparations stepped up a gear on Wednesday night, facing each other in the Mind Series with both teams sharing the spoils in an entertaining clash at Stamford Bridge.
Anglo-Nigerian winger Faustino Anjorin came off the bench in the 63rd minute to replace Hakim Ziyech - his first appearance of this pre-season after recovering from coronavirus.
Super Eagles hopeful Ike Ugbo wasn't involved for the second straight game, fueling speculation that he is not in the plans of manager Thomas Tuchel for the new season and a transfer is in the offing.
Having been given minutes in Tottenham's first three pre-season matches with Leyton Orient, Colchester United and MK Dons, defender Tobi Omole watched proceedings from the bench against the Blues.
Chelsea held a two-goal lead after 48 minutes thanks to a brace from their Morocco star Ziyech, who drilled the ball from outside the box to open the scoring before firing into the far corner to double the advantage.
Nine minutes into the second half, Lucas Moura halved the deficit with a deflected effort and Steven Bergwijn restored parity when he slotted the ball through goalkeeper Mendy's legs from a tight angle in the 70th minute.
Shortly after Tottenham Hotspur's equaliser, Anjorin missed a chance to give Chelsea back the lead when he sliced wide from the edge of the box.
Up next, Tottenham Hotspur host Arsenal in their last pre-season fixture on Sunday while Chelsea are in Belfast to face Europa League winners Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup next Wednesday.
