EFL Trophy : Dutch-Nigerian striker bags goal and assist for Man Utd in win vs Bradford City
Published: September 21, 2021
A brilliant second half performance earned Manchester United a 3-0 win over League Two club Bradford City in the Papa John's Trophy on Tuesday evening.
Dutch-Nigerian striker Dillon Hoogewerf came off the bench at half-time for his first appearance for the Red Devils youth teams this month, and was one of the standout players for manager Neil Wood's side.
After a goalless first half, Manchester United took the lead through an own goal by Yann Songo'o two minutes after the restart.
Joe Hugill then doubled United's lead in the 57th minute, firing in from close range after he was picked out by Hoogewerf.
The former Ajax Amsterdam starlet turned from provider to scorer when he netted a fine solo goal after receiving a pass from Shola Shoretire with eight minutes left on the clock.
Following their involvement with the U21s this evening, Hoogewerf and Shoretire are unlikely to taste action when the first team tackle West Ham United in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
Manchester United, who were beaten 3-2 by Lincoln City in their EFL Trophy opener, will face League One side Sunderland in their final group game.
