'An astonishing error' - England hero Lineker blasts VAR for disallowing Ndidi's goal vs Brighton
Published: September 22, 2021
England hero Gary Lineker has joined the debate over Wilfred Ndidi's disallowed goal in the closing minutes of Leicester City's 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove in a Premier League match at the AMEX Stadium.
The Foxes saw three VAR decisions go against them, one of which was Ndidi's goal being chalked off for offside.
The Nigeria international thought he had opened his account for the season five minutes from time when he headed in at the near post but his celebration was cut short as the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.
Just like the first disallowed goal netted by Ademola Looklman, Harvey Barnes was deemed to be obstructing the view of Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, according to the video assistant referee.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has insisted that referee Stuart Attwell was right to disallow Ndidi's goal on the advice of VAR, but Lineker, who has ties with Leicester City after representing them during his playing career, has a different opinion.
Replying to an image showing Barnes not obstructing the goalkeeper's line of vision, Lineker said on social media, according to LeicestershireLive : "Stills can be misleading but not this one. It was an astonishing error from VAR".
Ndidi and his Leicester City teammates face Millwall in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
