Ex-Celtic striker concerned Rangers could be forced to sell Aribo to keep books balanced
Published: December 17, 2021
Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie is of the opinion that Rangers could be forced into the sale of Joe Aribo as from the January transfer window.
The Scottish champions made a loss of £23.5million for the financial year ending June 2021 due to the Covid-19 impact and the sale of players or capital injection is necessary to keep their books balanced.
Rangers are keen to tie down the Nigeria international to a new contract but the versatile midfielder has indicated that he is not interested in prolonging his stay.
A return to England is being mooted for the 25-year-old with Brentford, Watford and Crystal Palace monitoring his situation.
"If Rangers are going to sell anyone in January, it will be Aribo," McAvennie told Football Insider.
"He’s top of the list. You look at who is in form and who is really catching the eye. Aribo can do no wrong.
"He’s doing the best he has ever done. We also know Rangers have loads of midfielders.
"There are a couple of lads who could come in and do Aribo’s job, lads who aren’t playing right now.
"So, for me, that’s the one Rangers will have to think about. I’m not saying anyone will definitely be sold.
"But that is always a possibility over there considering the finances. I’m just saying the facts. There is always a concern."
