18yo defender of Nigerian descent reacts after first call-up to Arsenal senior squad
Published: February 11, 2022
Zach Awe has taken to social media to express his happiness at receiving his first call-up to Arsenal's first team for their Premier League meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday night.
The 2004-born central defender of Nigerian descent watched proceedings from the bench as the Gunners recorded their first win this calendar year.
Brazilian defender Gabriel was the hero for the north London club, netting the game-winning goal in the 25th minute after taking advantage of chaos in the Wolves box.
Manager Mikel Arteta opted to go for experience, picking Rob Holding over Awe to shore up the defence in the 71st minute following the red card shown to Gabriel Martinelli.
Awe has forced his way into Arsenal U23s starting lineup since the year started, going the distance in four consecutive matches in the Premier League 2.
Writing on Instagram, Awe stated : "What an amazing experience last night ".
The 18-year-old Awe, who signed his first professional contract a year ago, has played non-binding games for England at U16 level.
Had he made his senior debut against Wolves, he would have stepped out onto the Molineux Stadium turf wearing the number 75 at the back of his jersey.
