Eguavoen, Amuneke meet with ex-England U21 star ahead of potential Nigeria call-up vs Ghana
Published: February 16, 2022
Nigeria's interim boss Augustine Eguavoen and his assistant Emmanuel Amuneke were in London this week for talks with some Super Eagles players ahead of the crucial 2022 World Cup playoffs against regional rivals Ghana.
Nigerian Federation boss Amaju Pinnick has disclosed via social media that himself, the General Secretary, Team Secretary and the aforementioned coaches held a series of meetings with English-based Nigerian players in London.
The players who physically attended the meetings are Leicester City trio Ademola Lookman, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi, along with Watford quartet William Troost-Ekong, Oghenekaro Etebo, Emmanuel Dennis and Samuel Kalu.
Eguavoen and Amuneke familiarizing themselves with Lookman before the squad announcement for the World Cup playoff matches with Ghana clearly indicates that the nimble-footed winger is in their plans for both games in March.
Lookman, a former England U21 international who won the World Cup at U20 level with the Young Lions in 2017, recently received a change of association approval from Fifa, clearing the way for him to represent only the Super Eagles at senior level.
Pinnick, who is close pals with Lookman's dad, has reiterated that the RB Leipzig loanee is eager to make his debut for the Super Eagles.
The 24-year-old has not done badly since his loan move to Leicester City, with a goal involvement of eight in 24 appearances across all competitions.
