CIV 0 Nigeria 1 : Okoronkwo nets late winner, Nnadozie saves penalty kick as Falcons qualify
Published: February 23, 2022
Nigeria's Super Falcons on Wednesday evening defeated the Lady Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 at the Robert Champroux Stadium, Abidjan to book their ticket to the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Esther Okoronkwo's 87th minute goal ensured that Nigeria advanced to the tournament 3-0 on aggregate.
The Nigerian side had beaten Cote d’Ivoire 2-0 in the first leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja last Friday.
The return leg on Abidjan was played behind closed doors and the Ivorian police had to shoot tear gas to disperse the angry fans who tried to catch a glimpse of the Lady Elephants in action against Super Falcons.
Goalkeeper Chidozie Nnadozie saved a first half penalty to keep the Nigerians in the game albeit the Falcons had a goal ruled out for offside afterwards.
The nine-time African champions were sitting on three yellow cards in the first half to underline the enormous pressure the Ivorians put them but were resolute in defence to repel the threats of their hosts.
