PL 2 : Okonkwo concedes 4 goals, Azeez scores og, Awe captain in Arsenal's loss to Liverpool
Published: February 26, 2022Four players of Nigerian descent were on parade at Meadow Park as Arsenal suffered a disappointing 4-1 loss to Liverpool in a Premier League 2 clash on Friday night.
Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, defender Zach Awe and midfielder Miguel Azeez went the distance for the Gunners, while Dutch-born winger Joel Ideho was introduced off the bench with eight minutes to go.
The Arsenal team was captained by Awe, fifteen days after he was an unused substitute for the first team in their 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Arsenal almost had the perfect start but Joel Lopez's effort from 20 yards brushed the top of the bar in the sixth minute.
The visiting Reds took the lead eight minutes to the end of the half as Jack Bearne's effort took a deflection off Azeez and ended up in the back of the net.
In the 51st minute, Billy Koumetio doubled the advantage before Marcelo Flores pulled a goal back twelve minutes later.
Conor Bradley fired home in the 72nd minute to restore Liverpool's two-goal cushion and Okonkwo's rustiness showed again when he conceded a fourth in stoppage time.
Okonkwo, who is a first teamer on paper, has played just two games for Arsenal's development squad in 2022, the fist of which was against Leicester City on February 21.
