UYL : Shoretire and Collins among the young stars on show as Dortmund see off Man Utd
Published: March 01, 2022
Borussia Dortmund caused an upset in the round of sixteen of the UEFA Youth League by seeing off Manchester United on penalties to advance to the last eight of the competition.
In the game staged at Leigh Sports Village Stadium, United winger Shola Shoretire and Dortmund center back Nnamdi Collins were some of the young stars on show from the off.
The young Red Devils twice came from behind to level, taking the game to a shootout won by the German visitors.
Sixteen minutes in, Bynoe-Gittens slipped the ball under goalkeeper Vitek to open the scoring but the home team did not have to wait too long for an equaliser as Charlie McNeill nutmegged a defender and drilled the ball in.
United came close to taking the lead as Fernandez found Shoretire but his effort went over the bar.
Bynoe-Gitten, formerly with Manchester City, netted his second of the game midway through the second half but Bennett smashed into the roof of the net to bring the game back to parity in the 85th minute, two minutes after Shoretire was replaced.
In the shootout, McNeill, Hannibal and Emeran all missed for Manchester United, and Bynoe-Gitten scored the decisive penalty for Dortmund.
A third player of Nigerian descent in Manchester United defensive midfielder Maxi Oyedele was an unused substitute.
