The real reason Everton winger Alex Iwobi was omitted from Nigeria squad to face Ghana
Published: March 04, 2022
Tongues have been wagging over the exclusion of Everton winger Alex Iwobi from the Super Eagles squad to take on Ghana in back-to-back matches later this month, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The omission of the Hale End Academy product has nothing to do with his form considering the fact that he has forced his way into Everton's starting lineup in recent weeks.
For the sake of clarity, Iwobi was not invited because he is ineligible for the games against the Black Stars after he was red carded in Nigeria's round of sixteen clash against Tunisia at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Shortly after the Super Eagles number 18 was introduced off the bench to
replace Kelechi Iheanacho, he took the walk of shame after a VAR review
upgraded a yellow card to a red.
Iwobi was deemed to have stamped on the ankle of Tunisia forward
Youssef Msakni as he controlled the ball, leading to his sending off.
FC Copenhagen new recruit Akinkunmi Amoo, who is an attacking midfielder and winger like Iwobi, has benefited from the absence of the 55-cap Nigeria international, with the Sidos FC product receiving his first invite to the senior national team.
Nigeria will take on Ghana at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday, March 25 and the second leg will be staged at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Tuesday, March 29.
