Super-sub Dessers enters Feyenoord's history books after scoring against FC Groningen
Published: March 06, 2022
Cyriel Dessers' goal against FC Groningen on Saturday night has put him in the Feyenoord history books.
According to the statisticians at OPTA, the Nigeria international is the second player ever to score five goals for Feyenoord after coming on as a sub in a single Eredivisie season, after József Kiprich in 1992/93.
Dessers made his return to the Feyenoord matchday squad after recovering from an injury that forced him to miss two games in a row before the visit of Groningen to the Stadion Feyenoord "De Kuip".
Introduced off the bench in the 56th minute, the Super Eagle was celebrating a goal fifteen minutes later, heading home a cross from Fredrik Aursnes to make it 1-1 - his first goal this calendar year.
Only the woodwork prevented Dessers from netting the winning goal shortly after he grabbed the equaliser.
Dessers's four other goals as a substitute came in matches against PSV Eindhoven, NEC Nijmegen, Sparta Rotterdam and AZ Alkmaar.
The Racing Genk loanee has been involved in nineteen matches in the Dutch Eredivisie, logging 440 minutes.
