'Bissouma couldn't help himself' - Ekoku on penalty given away by Brighton star vs Liverpool
Published: March 13, 2022
Liverpool kept themselves within three points of Premier League table toppers Manchester City with a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove at the American Express Community Stadium on Saturday.
Luis Diaz nodded the ball beyond the onrushing Seagulls goalkeeper Sanchez to open the scoring after he was picked out by former Cameroon center back Joel Matip in the 19th minute.
Just past the hour mark, Mohamed Salah smashed the ball home from the spot following a handball from Yves Bissouma.
1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning striker with the Super Eagles, Efan Ekoku was on commentary duties for the Premier League's international feed and had his say on the penalty incident.
The former Norwich City star believes the Mali international raised his hands to protect himself from the rocket shot and prevent an unlikely goal.
"The ball is going over the crossbar, Keita cuts across it, that's not troubling anybody, that's probably ending towards the corner flag to be honest," Ekoku said.
"Yves Bissouma just couldn't help himself. It's foul protection both for yourself and also for the goal."

Teenage Nigerian center back Odel Offiah, who has made two appearances for the first team of Brighton this season, was not named in the matchday squad against Liverpool.
