'He will be sad' - Ex-African POTY says Lookman will be upset Nigeria missed out on World Cup
Published: April 20, 2022Former African Footballer of the Year Victor Ikpeba stated the obvious when he revealed that Ademola Lookman would be upset over Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Leicester City winger's application to switch association to Nigeria was approved by Fifa in the weeks leading up to the back-to-back matches with Ghana, paving the way for him to earn his first senior invite.
After making his Nigeria debut off the bench in Kumasi, Lookman was named in the starting lineup as the three-time African champions were held to a 1-1 draw by a less-fancied Ghana side - a result that saw them miss out on the World Cup on the away goal rule.
The 2017 U20 World Cup winner with England is unarguably the highest profile player to switch allegiance from a European nation to the Super Eagles in recent years and the carrot dangled in front of him was the chance to play in the biggest stage, the World Cup.
The highlight of Lookman's performance in the second leg in Abuja was winning the penalty converted by William Troost-Ekong midway through the first half.
Reviewing the weekend action in the Premier League, Ikpeba said on SuperSport's Monday Night Football monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com : "Look at Lookman scoring the first goal for Leicester City, I am happy for the young lad.
"I know he will be sad not to be part of the Super Eagles that qualified for Qatar.
"He is a good player that will come good in the future."
Lookman has found the net in each of his last three starts for the Foxes in the Premier League ahead of Wednesday's game against his former club Everton at Goodison Park.
