How Peseiro's style could lead the Super Eagles to a new deadly strike partnership
Published: May 31, 2022
Jose Peseiro's team structure was not clearly visible in the game against Mexico but glimpses of it were on show.
It made sense that he started with two strikers up front in a hybrid set-up with Terem Moffi joining up with Cyriel Dessers to engage a pressing scheme.
The industrious Moffi was also tasked with dropping off into the midfield to compress space when Mexico evaded the press.
For those who thought Peseiro was only about defensive football, this was an eye-opener.
There is no doubt about it that it was a top-notch attacking style of play. However, Moffi's performance wasn't too great.
He was hardworking but the few times he was on the ball, he didn't do very much being that he was acting as the final link between midfield and attack.
This Peseiro style could be leading the Super Eagles into a new deadly strike partnership. Replacing Moffi with Victor Osimhen could be revolutionary.
Osimhen is renowned for his ferocity in physical battles and is a highly clinical finisher with 18 goals in 32 appearances for Napoli in 2021-2022.
However, Dessers is a highly skilled striker in a more technical sense. His projected forward partnership with Victor Osimhen has the potential to be deadly with both possessing physical strength and technical skills.
The Super Eagles' attack will take on a new rhythm with the partnership of these two players.
With their qualities, defending against them will be a nightmarish time for opposition defences.
Peseiro may just need to fine-tune the chemistry between them to get the best performance.
This has the potential to be a regeneration of how France utilized Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann to win the World Cup.
