Why Chelsea should target Super Eagles star as a direct replacement for Marcos Alonso
Published: May 31, 2022Chelsea's takeover troubles have finally come to an end, with the London giants putting up an official statement confirming the transfer of the club's ownership to a consortium led by American billionaire Todd Boehly.
As expected, there are many transfer rumours surrounding the club, especially with senior defenders like Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving the club.
With the futures of Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso also up in the air, reports of direct replacements have been rampant.
However, a particular report from tier-1 sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Spanish title-winning defender Marcos Alonso is ready to leave Stamford Bridge after a six-year stint in London.
Chelsea board knows since long time that Marcos Alonso wants to leave in the summer. They’re prepared to let him go, discussions on the fee will take place soon. ⏳🇪🇸 #CFC

In his time at Stamford Bridge, Alonso has won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, Premier League, FA Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
The left-back arrived at Stamford Bridge from Italian club Fiorentina, and now that he is set to depart, Chelsea will be on the lookout for a replacement.
Allnigeriasoccer.com will however be revealing why Chelsea should be targeting Super Eagles full-back as Marcos Alonso's direct replacement.
Calvin Bassey has had the best season of his life, winning the Scottish Cup and getting to the final of the Europa League with Rangers.
He could be a great candidate as Alonso's direct replacement and Chelsea should explore this possibility.
Thomas Tuchel mainly utilises a 3 centre-back formation with 2 full-backs rampaging down the touchline.
Alonso is behind Ben Chilwell in the pecking order but Bassey would relish rotating and eventually competing with the Englishman for a starting spot as he is younger and also a mentality monster.
He'll also get games as Chilwell's ACL injury is not an easy one to come back from which will be to Bassey's advantage.
Not to forget that whilst Alonso was technically outstanding, he was criticized throughout his time at Chelsea for his chronic lack of pace and athleticism.
On the other hand, Bassey is technically sound and has the ability to overlap and underlap. To crown it all, he is insanely athletic and quite quick over short and long distances.
A back-three could even bring out the best in the Nigerian as he would have enough defensive security to enable him to run the flanks as much as he would like.
A fee of 25 million pounds has also been quoted for Bassey and this should not be a problem for a club of Chelsea's calibre.
For the aforementioned reasons, it would be a wise decision for Chelsea to target Bassey as Alonso's replacement.
