Dessers refuses to rule out return to Feyenoord; reacts to first goal in Nigeria colours
Published: June 06, 2022Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has refused to rule out a return to Feyenoord despite the Dutch Eredivisie side not taking up the option to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
The Racing Genk-owned player had a banner season at Feyenoord, scoring 20 goals in 41 games across all competitions, and won the Europa Conference League top scorer award.
Dessers revealed that the Rotterdam club did not trigger the option to buy embedded into his loan deal because they have to sell players before any new signings can arrive.
In an interview with Nigeria Info FM, monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Dessers was asked why Genk and Feyenoord failed to agree terms on a permanent move and he responded : "The financial situation at Feyenoord is complicated right now.
"First they need to sell players before they buy new players. We'll see what happens, no doors are closed but for this moment I'm returning to Genk."
On if there's a chance he could return to Feyenoord, Dessers said : "The thing in football is that you can never say never. That's what I learnt and it's possible, I'm open to every thing.
"It could be Feyenoord, it could be Genk but also it could be a move somewhere else so we'll see what happens. "
The Belgian-born centre forward netted his first goal in Nigeria colours as they suffered a 2-1 loss to Mexico in an international friendly on May 29.
"It's a special moment, that's for sure. This is a thing you dream of for years already and to finally get the first goal that's amazing feeling but let's hope there's still more to come, " Dessers said.
The 27-year-old can become cap-tied to Nigeria if he is given minutes in any of the upcoming matches against Sierra Leone or São Tomé and Príncipe.
