Bassey or Sanusi : Who should Peseiro pick to start at LB/LWB against Sierra Leone?
Published: June 08, 2022
Nigeria's Super Eagles will face their toughest test yet under the guidance of Jose Peseiro with Sierra Leone, Sao Tome, and Guinea Bissau to face in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Peseiro would be looking for ways to improve his team's performance after two defeats to Mexico and Ecuador.
However, the squad which played in the friendlies held in the United States will be much different with a number of key players like Victor Osimhen, Ahmed Musa, Samuel Chukwueze among others joining up with the Super Eagles.
This brings up so many questions in different positions, with one of them being who should Peseiro choose to start against Sierra Leone in the left-back position between Calvin Bassey and Zaidu Sanusi, or left wing-back position depending on the formation?
A million-dollar question which allnigeriasoccer.com will discuss.
There is a case to go with Sanusi who is more solid defensively and very capable in the attack. However, Bassey offers more variations to the team.
He has a wide range of capabilities and is highly flexible such that he can be used in many tactical set-ups without a drop off in his production.
Sanusi is more suited to a back four while Bassey is highly valuable in either a back four or a back five as a wing-back. The Rangers defender can also slot in as a left-sided centre-back if need be.
This rare quality gives Peseiro the luxury of switching up his tactics when things are not going the way he wants.
However, the most important thing to note is that Bassey has been a regular under Peseiro having played against both Mexico and Ecuador.
Sanusi on the other hand has not played under the manager at all. The momentum is clearly with Bassey as he is already getting familiar with Peseiro's demands.
Allnigeriasoccer recommends Bassey to start ahead of Sanusi and the position should be the Rangers' man to lose.
