Nigeria legend tips Tottenham Hotspur to pick Champions League spot at Arsenal's expense
Published: August 17, 2022
Despite the exciting group of players at Arsenal that manager Mikel Arteta are building for a possible onslaught in the European Champions League, former African Footballer of the Year winner and Nigeria legend Victor Nosa Ikpeba believes that North London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur will nick the fourth place spot in the English Premier League this season.
Arsenal have signed Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City, Fabio Viera from Porto, Matt Turner from New England Revolution in the MLS as well as youngster Marquinhos from São Paulo and are currently behind Manchester City on goal difference in the table after two weeks of football in a brand new season.
Ikpeba while making his predictions on the top four positions at the end of the season on Monday Night Football said:
"My top four are Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs," Ikpeba states in response to presenter Charles Anazado's question.
"I love Arsenal but I'm not sure I think... That continuity, that momentum to do the job and end the season, they don't have it," Ikpeba, who played under the guidance of former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger whilst at AS Monaco as a youngster said.
"Gabriel Jesus coming to Arsenal? Jesus is a massive asset. City lost it bringing Jesus to Arsenal but I don't think... I think those top four have...
"Look at Spurs, they have so much depth, Chelsea have so much depth, Liverpool have their injury worries but when these teams are in top form, I don't see Arsenal making the top four," Ikpeba insists.
The former Nigeria international is hinging his opinion on the abject finish of Arsenal to the 2021/2022 campaign in which they lost key players like Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney to injuries and then lost 'winnable' matches against Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove and Southampton.
