Ex-Arsenal midfielder Nwakali goal drought for club and country ends at 2,345 minutes
Published: September 11, 2022
Former Arsenal starlet Kelechi Nwakali has netted his first goal in SD Ponferradina's colours, getting on the scoresheet in a 2-1 loss to Real Zaragoza on Sunday evening.
It was his first goal for club and country in 504 days, with his last strike coming against Kenneth Omeruo's CD Leganés on April 25, 2021.
Nwakali played 34 matches combined for AD Alcorcón, SD Huesca, SD Ponferradina and the national team without finding the net.
In total, the versatile midfielder spent 2,345 minutes on the pitch before ending his goal drought comprising 201 minutes for the Super Eagles, 503 minutes in an Alcorcón shirt, 1,242 minutes for SD Huesca and 399 minutes wearing the colours of SD Ponferradina.
Against Real Zaragoza, Nwakali equalised with a long-range effort in the 44th minute, canceling out Giuliano Simeone's 12th minute opener.
Simeone's game-winning goal five minutes into the second half meant Nwakali and his teammates came away from the game with nothing.
SD Ponferradina are 15th in the La Liga 2 standings with 6 points from five matches ahead of their visit to Albacete next weekend.
