Arteta supplements Arsenal's Premier League squad with five Nigeria-eligible players
Published: September 15, 2022
Arsenal have confirmed their finalized squad for the first half of the 2022-2023 Premier League season following the closure of the summer transfer window on September 1, 2022.
There are two separate lists - the main one containing a total of 21 players and another reserved for only U21 players and scholars irrespective of nationality.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta has supplemented the squad with five players eligible to represent the Nigerian national teams.
Goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo, wingers Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Joel Ideho, striker Henry Timi Davies and defender Zach Awe have been included on Arsenal's U21 list (contract and scholars).
Butler-Oyedeji, Ideho, Davies and Awe are on professional contracts at Arsenal while Brian is in the first year of his scholarship.
Seven other Nigeria-eligible youngsters namely Folarin Balogun, Mazeed Ogungbo, Miguel Azeez, Ovie Ejeheri, Ryan Alebiosu, Tim Akinola and Arthur Okonkwo have been listed as U21 players on the Premier League roster but are not eligible to represent Arsenal in the first half of the season as they have all been loaned out.
Balogun, Ogungbo, Azeez, Ejeheri, Alebiosu, Akinola and Okonkwo are spending at least the first half of the campaign at Stade de Reims, Crawley Town, UD Ibiza, Chelmsford City, Kilmarnock, Chesterfield and Crewe Alexandra respectively.
Of the five Nigerian players eligible to represent Arsenal, only Awe has received a call-up for a Premier League game in the past, against Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 2022.
