'You hardly noticed it' - Ex-England manager on Osimhen's absence in Napoli's rout of Rangers
Published: September 15, 2022Former England manager Fabio Capello has hailed Napoli for their display in Wednesday night's Champions League win over Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox Stadium.
The Italian Serie A side are topping Group A of the Champions with six points accumulated after a 3-0 rout of Rangers.
Playing with ten men for over half an hour, the Scottish giants went behind when Politano converted a spot kick in the 68th minute, Raspadori added a second for the visitors with five minutes left before Ndombélé put the icing on the cake with Napoli's third goal in stoppage time, leaving Rangers with a mountain to climb to qualify for the knockout round.
Napoli's win was more impressive considering that they did it without their record acquisition and star striker Victor Osimhen, something which was pointed out by Capello.
The Nigeria international was unavailable for selection due to an injury he suffered in the opening day win against Liverpool in Naples.
In the absence of his number 9, manager Luciano Spalletti selected Giovanni Simeone to step into the shoes of the Super Eagles striker but the Argentine did not take full advantage of the chances that came his way.
"Napoli's starting center forward was missing and you hardly noticed it: the team runs, there is spirit and there is quality," Capello said to Sky Sport Italia.
"It was nice to see: playing against Rangers is not easy, but there was quality and togetherness."
Osimhen has been diagnosed with a second-degree lesion in his right femoral bicep and he is not expected to return to action until after the international break.
