Published: September 15, 2022
Sheriff Tiraspol's perfect start to the UEFA Europa League ended on Thursday evening as they lost 2-0 to Manchester united at the Stadionul Zimbru - Chisinau on Matchday 2 of the competition reports All Nigeria Soccer.
Nigerian strikers Rasheed Akanbi and Iyayi Atiemwen were in the starting lineup for the home side who were unbeaten in their previous eight games in all competitions (W5 D3 L0) going into the match.
Manchester United scored both goals in the first half with goals from Jadon Sancho (17th minute) and Cristiano Ronaldo (39th minute, penalty kick).
Akanbi was teed up by Mouhamed Diop early in the second half but the ball was cleared before he could strike at the edge of the box.
In the 58th minute, Akanbi pounced and intelligently tried to lob the ball beyond a stranded David de Gea who was off his line after Tyrell Malacia nodded the ball goalwards.
The ball however nestled on top of the goal post.
Atiemwen was booked for a foul in the 63rd minute and was lucky to escape a sending-off barely 10 minutes later for another foul.
Akanbi was replaced by Brazilian forward Felipe Vizeu with about 20 minutes to the end of the match and Atiemwen subbed out at minute 81.
