'Very tough task' - Ex-Liverpool star weighs in on 2017 Super Eagles invitee's England chances
Published: October 19, 2022
Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has weighed in on 2017 Super Eagles invitee Eberechi Eze's England chances.
The attacking midfielder was on target for Crystal Palace in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Selhurst Park on Tuesday night.
There is an ongoing debate whether Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate should take Eze to the upcoming World Cup in Qatar on the back of his outstanding performances for his London club.
Against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Anglo-Nigerian made it two goals in as many home games just after halftime, heading in a brilliant delivery into the box from another player of interest to the Nigeria Football Federation, Michael Olise.
Southgate recently ran the rule over Eze and other England prospects during the Premier League meeting between Leicester City and Crystal Palace at the King Power Stadium.
The former Arsenal schoolboy was due to be named in England's provisional squad for the 2020 European Championship, only for Southgate to scratch his name out after he suffered a season-ending injury.
"If [James] Maddison can't get in, what chance has Eze got? That is the level of quality England have in that midfield area," Adam told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"It is going to be a very tough ask to go to the World Cup. There is a lot of quality not involved in the squad. You can only dictate with your performances.
"If he does unbelievably well between now and the World Cup, then he'll have a chance. He'll be on the radar because England will need everybody."
Eze trained with the Super Eagles before a canceled friendly against Burkina Faso in March 2017 but since then his status has changed as he is now provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth England.
