Ex-Super Eagles star identifies where to find the next Shorunmu, Enyeama
Published: December 09, 2022
Former Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has sensationally identified the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as the perfect league to uncover outstanding goalkeepers that will replicate the form former keepers like himself and Vincent Enyeama were known for.
The current crop of Super Eagles goalkeepers, Francis Uzoho and Maduka Okoye have not inspired confidence among the fanbase leading to some sections of Nigerian fans wondering if Enyeama did not retire from international football pretty early when he did in 2015.
Shorunmu spoke on Brila FM, Lagos on the subject of the Eagles discovering seasoned keepers as the country had in the 80s through mid 2000s.
"We will start the search for the next top goalkeeper from the Nigeria Professional Football League. We have good players in the league," Shorunmu noted.
"The best goalkeepers Nigeria have had started from the home front and I can tell you that there have been quality goalkeepers coming through. They just need that confidence.
"This is not to say that the keepers we have from the foreign leagues aren't good enough but we know that Nigeria have produced great goalkeepers in the past and right now there are quality ones in the league.
" Another good thing is that we have some former keepers who are returning home from their stints in European leagues and are helping in nurturing the new generation of keepers," the onetime Stationery Stores keep who was Nigeria's first choice goalie at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan stressed.
The duo of Okoye and Uzoho have been under intense criticisms from the fans over their gaffes at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Ghana respectively.
