Celtic's Super Eagles-eligible CB reveals he has had no contact with Germany coach
Published: January 03, 2023
Glasgow Celtic central defender Moritz Jenz has revealed that he has not been contacted by coach Hansi Flick about a possible invitation to Germany's national team.
Although the Berlin native qualifies to represent the Super Eagles, he is leaning towards playing for Germany internationally.
Flick has watched Jenz this season, in a UEFA Champions League game against RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena on October 5, but the German-Nigerian stopper did not exactly cover himself in glory during the game as the Hoops conceded three goals.
Jenz has confessed that he is not yet at the level required for him to represent the four-time world champions.
The 23-year-old has lost his spot in Celtic's starting lineup, having failed to play any of their last five matches in the Scottish Premiership, which makes it more difficult for him to get a call-up.
When asked if he has been contacted by Flick, Jenz told German publication RBB24 : "No, we haven't had contact yet. When we played in Leipzig in the Champions League, he was in the stadium.
"But we didn't have a good game, we lost. The second leg in Glasgow was good, I would have liked to have had him there (laughs) . But no, we haven't had contact yet.
"I don't think I'm at the level yet to be there. But I am working on it."
Jamal Musiala, one of the standout young players at the 2022 World Cup, and Dennis Aogo, a member of Germany's squad to the 2010 World Cup, chose to represent Germany over Nigeria at international level.
Two other German-born players Leon Balogun and Kevin Akpoguma pledged their international allegiances to Nigeria and are cap-tied to the three-time African champions.
