'It was Chelsea' - PSV chief admits Madueke's transfer in January was not planned
Published: March 13, 2023
PSV Eindhoven's director of football Marcel Brands has admitted that Noni Madueke's transfer to Chelsea in the January transfer window was not planned.
The Dutch giants terminated their contract with the England U21 international of Nigerian descent before its expiration in exchange for a fee of approximately 40 million euros.
The Anglo-Nigerian was the second key player to depart PSV in January, after Netherlands' World Cup star Cody Gakpo who became the most expensive outbound transfer in the history of the club with his move to Liverpool.
The 21-year-old registered 20 goals and 14 assists in 80 appearances as a PSV Eindhoven player.
Brands admitted that Chelsea's bid for Madueke was too good to turn down.
"Madueke was not planned and not expected, but it came a lot of money on the table, and it was Chelsea. That's when we made that choice," Brands said on The Friday Move podcast.
Madueke put pen to paper on a seven-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea with a club option for the 2030-2031 season.
