Davies, Nwaneri hoping to follow in Wilshere's footsteps as Arsenal battle Man City in FA Youth Cup
Published: April 04, 2023Arsenal U18s, coached by the club's legendary midfielder Jack Wilshere, play their biggest game of the season on Tuesday night when they host Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium in the semifinals of the prestigious FA Youth Cup.
The big news from a Nigerian perspective is that former Manchester City schoolboy Henry Timi Davies trained with the Gunners U18 squad at London Colney on Monday, their final workout before taking to the pitch.
The 2004-born winger has not figured for the Arsenal youth teams since September 2022 due to injury, but is now close to making a return to action.
After 206 days without being called up for a competitive game, Davies was named in the matchday squad for the U18 Premier League clash against Leicester City on March 28, but was a non-playing substitute.
Davies arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2021 with a huge reputation, but injuries have slowed down his progress, making just one appearance in the U18 Premier League.
Meanwhile, history-making attacking midfielder of Nigerian descent, Ethan Nwaneri also participated in Arsenal U18s final training session before today's clash against Manchester City.
The 16-year-old will be oozing confidence after helping the Young Lions qualify for the 2023 U17 EURO during the international break, scoring braces in back-to-back games against Denmark and Northern Ireland.
Nwaneri netted against Millwall and Cambridge United in the third round and quarterfinals respectively of this season's FA Youth Cup.
Davies and Nwaneri are hoping to follow in the footsteps of their coach Wilshere, who played a key role in Arsenal winning the FA Youth Cup in 2009.
