Leicester City striker Iheanacho scores against Manchester City again
Published: April 15, 2023
Kelechi Iheanacho scored what turned out to be a consolation goal as Leicester City stumbled at the Etihad Stadium, losing 3-1 to reigning champions Manchester City to remain in the relegation zone.
While Wifred Ndidi started for the visitors, Manchester City old boy Iheanacho came off the bench at halftime, replacing Jamie Vardy.
Dean Smith's side found themselves with a mountain to climb after conceding three goals inside the opening twenty five minutes.
England defender John Stones broke the deadlock in the fifth minute when he sent a volley into the corner of the net, before Norwegian goal machine Erling Haaland converted the second from the penalty spot eight minutes later.
The referee reversed his original decision and awarded a penalty after Ndidi was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.
Haaland scored his second and The Citizens' third when he lifted the ball over goalkeeper Daniel Iversen after Kevin De Bruyne slid the ball to him.
In the second half, Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola took off his top players John Stones, Erling Haaland, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish, and there was a drop in their performance.
Iheanacho pulled one back when he tapped the ball into an empty net after Ederson parried a save into his path in the 75th minute, and the Nigeria international could not believe another of his effort didn't go in the 90th minute when he struck the woodwork.
The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner has now scored three goals and registered two assists in thirteen appearances against Manchester City since he departed the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2017.
Iheanacho played 64 games and had 21 goals to his name as a Manchester City player.
Following their 20th loss of the season, Leicester City remain second bottom in the Premier League table.
