UCL : Chukwuemeka unused sub as ruthless Real Madrid defeat Chelsea
Published: April 18, 2023Real Madrid on Tuesday night set up potential semifinals fixtures against Manchester City in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to reach the last four places 4-0 on aggregate.
Carlo Ancelotti's side had defeated his former team Chelsea at the Santiago Bernabeu by same scoreline in last Wednesday's first leg meeting.
Nigeria-eligible midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka who was on the substitute bench was not introduced in the high octane clash in London.
There was an early scare for Real Madrid when it appeared Thiago Silva stepped on the toes of Karim Benzema.
Madrid almost went ahead when Vinicius Junior was through on goal but impeded by Wesley Fofana.
N'Golo Kante was presented with the first real chance to put Chelsea ahead in the 11th minute but his left footed shot missed target much to the relief of the Los Blancos.
Conor Gallagher saw his header off target with half an hour played from six yards out albeit he was flagged offside.
Towards the end of the first half, Thibaut Courtois saved superbly from a Marc Cucurella effort.
Kante's goal-bound shot eight minutes into the second half deflected off Antonio Rudiger.
Madrid opened their account in the 58th minute through Rodrygo after a free run into the opposition half. His cross reached Vinicius Junior who replicated the favour before he found the net despite a crowded six yard box.
Rodrygo doubled the lead for Madrid in the 80th minute after great combination play by Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde set him up to nick the ball home as Kepa Arrizabalaga sprawled on the floor in vain to keep the ball away.
