'Anything can happen' - South Africa U17 coach warns Golden Eaglets ahead of final group game
Published: May 04, 2023
South Africa U17 head coach Duncan Crowie says he is targeting at least a draw in the Amajimbos' final group game against Nigeria at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium, Constantine this coming Saturday.
Both teams head into the fixture knowing that a win will guarantee them the last automatic qualification slot to the quarterfinals, with Morocco already through to the knockout rounds after a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Golden Eaglets on Wednesday.
South Africa got their campaign back on track by beating Zambia in a five-goal thriller after an opening day loss to Morocco.
Nigeria are only ahead of South Africa by virtue of having a better goal difference and whoever wins the duel on Saturday will finish at least second in Group B of the 2023 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
Speaking at the post-match press conference after his side's win over Zambia, Crowie stated : "Nothing is done yet. This is a tough group and anything can happen.
"We still have work to do but at least now we have a win to work with. We will just need a draw in that match to get through."
South Africa have shown they can score goals with three against Zambia whereas the Golden Eaglets managed just one against the same opponents.
Of the nine previous times Nigeria have participated in the U17 AFCON in its various guises, they have reached the knockout rounds on seven occasions.
