Peseiro reveals why Bendel Insurance young star Nwachukwu was called up for AFCONQ
Published: June 13, 2023
Speaking to reporters in Lagos, manager Jose Peseiro has explained why he decided to hand a call-up to Bendel Insurance young star Divine Nwachukwu for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sierra Leone.
The former Golden Eaglets star is one of four home-based players in contention to make their senior debuts against the Leone Stars on Sunday, the others being Victor Sochima, Olorunleke Ojo and Chidiebube Duru.
Giving an insight into what led to his decision to hand an invite to Nwachukwu, Peserio stated that the attacking midfielder is a quality player and has the capacity to play for the national team.
The Portuguese football tactician went on to say that he chose Nwachukwu because he needed to beef up the midfield, adding that he didn't need wingers and central defenders from the NPFL for the camp in June.
Peserio, who watched the NPFL Championship playoffs, admitted that he saw in the league good central defenders, fullbacks, midfielders, wingers and strikers, and they could be named in the Super Eagles for future camps.
Nwachukwu has reported for international duty in a rich vein of form, having netted three goals in his last four games in the NPFL playoffs.
The 20-year-old was a member of Nigeria's squad to the 2019 Fifa U17 World Cup in Brazil.
