'It'll be talk of the town' - Musa urges Super Eagles teammates to avoid losing to Sierra Leone
Published: June 17, 2023
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has sent a clear message to his teammates before their trip to Monrovia, warning them that they should avoid losing to a Sierra Leone team who are desperate for three points to keep alive their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying hopes.
These days, the former CSKA Moscow sensation is a bit-part player for the senior national team, having started only one of their last seventeen matches, but remains an influential figure off the pitch given his status as Nigeria's record appearance maker in history.
The Super Eagles players faced the wrath of the fans on at least three occasions in the past eighteen months following defeats in competitive matches against Tunisia and Guinea-Bissau, and a draw against the Black Stars of Ghana, a result that saw them miss out on the 2022 World Cup.
Musa stressed that the Super Eagles fans expect Sierra Leone to be beaten squarely and would turn their back on the team if the result does not go their way.
"We know that it is not going to be easy, maybe we win 10-0 it's nothing new. They'll say definitely you can do it but when we lose against them, it will be talk of the town," Musa told reporters.
"We know the importance so we have to do our best to win that game by God's grace."
Nigeria, who are one point behind leaders Guinea-Bissau, will return to the top of the Group A standings and qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by avoiding defeat against Sierra Leone.
