2023 Fifa WWC: Five observations from Super Falcons hard-fought draw v Canada
Published: July 21, 2023
The Super Falcons shared the points with Canada in a tight Group B match at the ongoing 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup on Friday morning.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents the five observations from the match.
1. Super Falcons solid defensively
The Super Falcons were solid defensively against the Olympic Champions.
Nigeria's defensive approach limited the Canadian women to zero shots on target in he first half.
2. Improved second half by Canada
After a difficult first half, Canada grew into the game in the second half with the introduction of Cloe Lacasse.
The Canadian Women won a penalty in the 48th minute which was saved by Chiamaka Nnadozie.
3. Chiamaka Nnadozie the hero
The Super Falcons goalkeeper showed her importance to the team with an impressive performance against Canada.
The 22-year-old saved a penalty from Christine Sinclair in the 48th minute to deny the Olympic champions a chance to take the lead. She finished the game with 3 saves.
4. Christy Ucheibe and Deborah Abiodun impressive in midfield
The duo produced a solid performance in the base of the midfield to protect the defenders.
Ucheibe made six successful tackles and blocked three shots on goal, while Abiodun won seven of the ten attempted ground duels.
However, Abiodun's doggedness and physicality will be missed against Australia after she was sent off for a violent conduct.
5. Super Falcons lack creativity
The Super Falcons struggled to create chances which limited the influence of Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala.
Nigeria created just one big chance, which produced the only shot on target in the entirety of the game.
The lack of creativity noticed in the Falcons midfield further raised questions about the omission of Ngozi Okobi.
