Unsung hero: Pundit reveals the major role played by Udogie in Tottenham's winning goal v Sheffield Utd
Published: September 16, 2023
Football London pundit Kieran Horn has given credit to Destiny Udogie for the major role he played in Tottenham's 2-1 win over Sheffield United in week 5 of the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Two goals in quick succession from Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski canceled out Gustavo Hamer's opener and that gave the north London club the victory over the newly promoted side.
As usual, Udogie started the game on the left side of Ange Postecoglou's four-man defence and was on the pitch throughout the dramatic encounter.
It was the crucial block from the Italian-Nigerian left-back that led to Tottenham's winning goal.
While Kulusevski and Richarlison have grabbed the headlines, Udogie has also been credited for his role in the triumph.
"Understandably, talk surrounding the dramatic win mostly involved Richarlison and Kulusevski but that winning goal does not happen without a key Udogie interception," he wrote in his column for Football London.
"With Sheffield United in control of the ball after seeing Spurs equalise, Udogie sprinted to get right onto the tails of his opposite number before carefully reaching his leg around to win the ball fairly.
"His crucial decision then started a flowing move with one-touch football involving Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Ivan Perisic and Richarlison, eventually ending with the ball at Kulusevski's feet and he made no mistake in dispatching from the edge of the box."
It has been a dream start for the 20-year-old who has started all of Tottenham's Premier League games this season and has recorded two assists.
Udogie and his Spurs' teammates next face Arsenal in the Premier League on September 24 at the Emirates Stadium.
