'We are always happy' - Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar on competition for places in Super Eagles attack
Published: November 14, 2023
Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar has insisted that Nigerian players are always delighted to be called up for Super Eagles duty whether or not they are given minutes.
Former Almeria goal poacher Sadiq was one of the surprise inclusions in the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers given that he has not scored since September 2022.
The Rio Olympics bronze medalist has returned to the Super Eagles fold after recovering from a career threatening injury that kept him sidelined for eleven months.
Sadiq was one of the first players to report for international duty in Uyo on Monday, along with Kenneth Omeruo and Jamilu Collins.
Speaking after the gym workout on Monday, he said: "As you can see we just arrived to do some workout recovery. It was a hard one but we will have some rest.
"Whenever we come here we are always motivated, we want to play for the country, when other players come we'll all be ready."
The Super Eagles attack is loaded with Taiwo Awoniyi, Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho, Terem Moffi as well as Sadiq competing for two available spots in attack.
When asked to comment on the intense competition for places in attack, Sadiq said: "Whenever we are here we are always happy to represent the country whether you start, have some minutes or you are on the bench.
"They should keep supporting us and I hope in these two games we'll come up with good results."
Sadiq scored on his full Super Eagles debut in a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
