Video: Media-shy Club Brugge midfielder Onyedika two goals from outside the box against Anderlecht
Published: April 08, 2024
Club Brugge had an unlikely hero in their 3-1 win over RSC Anderlecht in a Jupiler Pro League clash staged at Jan Breydel-Stadion on Sunday evening.
Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika was the standout performer on parade having scored a brace, with both goals coming from outside the box.
Before the visit of Anderlecht, the FC Ebedei product had managed only eight goals in his entire career spanning stints with FC Fredericia, FC Midtjylland and Club Brugge.
Onyedika was hoping for a handshake from Club Brugge's assistant press officer, Johan Koekelbergh after his Man of the Match performance, but he was literally forced to the press zone for a post-match interview.
Onyedika initially showed reluctance to participate in the interview but eventually accompanied Club Brugge's media representative after much persistence.
"I am surprised to be here because I've never come here so it's good to be here. It feels good (scoring my first two league goals) to help the team get the three points in this playoff," Onyedika said to Het Laatste Nieuws.
"It was a good energy and we felt the fans also but the difference is that we were lucky today, the other games we were unlucky to get what we deserved but today we got it."
In the race for the Jupiler Pro League title, Club Brugge are third in the standings with 30 points, five less than surprise package
Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht.
Speaking on Club Brugge's hopes and aspirations for the remainder of the playoffs, Onyedika said: "We know the situation we are in, it's a much needed three points. Everyone in the team knew what was at stake today so we go for it.
"Everything is possible now because it's l eight games to go and the difference is five points. We hope to keep getting the three points and see what happens at the end."
