'There is a lot of interest' - Akpom speaks on his future with Ajax Amsterdam
Published: May 24, 2024Chuba Akpom has confirmed that he has been contacted by several clubs on the possibility of leaving Ajax Amsterdam in the summer.
The Nigerian forward joined Ajax with a huge pedigree, having played a vital role in helping Middlesborough to the Championship playoffs in the 2022/2023 season.
He scored 28 goals in the English second-tier division and deservedly won the PFA Championship Player's Player of the Year, EFL Championship Player of the Season, as well as the Golden Boot.
It was upon this giant stride that he arrived at Ajax but has failed to hit the heights he reached with Boro and is being linked with a return to England already with Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace reportedly interested in him.
Speaking with Telegraaf, Akpom confessed that several lines of communication have been opened with him upon the possibility of leaving Amsterdam just a year after his arrival.
"There is a lot of interest. But that makes sense given the limited playing time I got and the number of goals I scored. I am now 28 and feel that I am at my best physically and mentally," Akpom said.
"My goal is always to play as high as possible and for the best team imaginable. Not only am I doing well in the Premier League, but there is also contact with clubs from Germany and France.
"But I have a contract with Ajax and maybe there will be a manager who really likes me. We'll see what happens in the summer."
The Super Eagles-eligible forward has found it difficult to displace Brian Bobbey, the player he was supposed to compete with, from the starting lineup and could now leave the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Despite his struggles, he was still able to reach double figures for goal involvements for the second consecutive season, scoring 15 goals and providing three assists in all competitions.
